Section 10A of the Irish Languages Act requires SETU to advertise in Irish as well as English and the University as a whole must meet, and report on, the following targets:
At least 20 per cent of any advertising placed should be in the Irish language. This will be measured on the cost of buying media. For example, if we spend €1,000 to buy media for an advertising campaign, at least €200 of the cost must be in the Irish language.
- Media buying means buying spots on radio stations, spots on digital radio like Spotify, outdoor advertising like 48 sheets or press ads in newspapers.
- It does not include the cost of ad design, recording ads, buying exhibition space, collateral design, merchandise or any of the other promotional activities.
At least 5 per cent of advertising spend should be in the Irish language through Irish language media. This means we must spend 5 per cent of our media buying spend on stations such as Raidio na Life or publications like Avondhu.
For the purpose of the Act, “advertising” means communication with the aim of promoting a product or service, recruitment of staff, legislative or policy initiatives, the purchase or sale of land or assets, the provision of services, or public consultation. In reality, it means that if you are buying media to do any of the above, 20 per cent of that advertising must be in the Irish language.
Organic or non-paid activity
Please note that the Act includes paid advertising AND organic or non-paid promotion.
- Examples of non-paid promotions include social media posts advertising a vacancy, recruiting students for a course, advertising a research position etc.
- It does not include posts celebrating student or staff research, funding wins or the majority of our news stories.
