Biography
Marie is a lecturer in Mental Health Nursing at SETU. She is a registered psychiatric nurse, registered nurse prescriber and a BABCP accredited Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapist. Marie has over 20 years experience in mental health, the last ten years at specialist level and remains in CBT practice. Her most recent HSE mental health service role was in the development of an integrated CBT service in a rural adult mental health service to encourage increased access to evidence-based interventions in secondary care - reducing polypharmacy and rationalisation of medication endorsing the stepped care approach in the treatment of common mental health difficulties in the community. Her primary research area is in CBT for suicidal ideation (CBT-Suicide Prevention) through the promotion of standardisation of collaborative risk assessment/ planning and imagery interventions to stabilise risk. This is the focus of Marie's Phd study.
Marie is also a researcher, part of international research teams. A recent project, funded by Erasmus+, SSTeMM https://sstemm.eu/ examined student nurse and mentor's stress in the clinical area, developing interventions and resources underpinned by the principles of CBT.
She is involved in the Medicines Mgt Programme (MMP) updating national guidance on BZRA's in Anxiety and Insomnia Best Practice, updating CBT resources as part of its stepped care iniative for GPs, prescribers and pharmacists.
Marie is SETU's Programme Lead for the Level 9 MSc in CBT and MI for Practice (commenced role in 2022) and the Level 8 Cert in the Management of Occupational Stress and Wellbeing (commenced role in 2019).
Marie commenced her lecturing role in WIT in 2018. She teaches both undergraduate nurses and postgraduate students up to MSc level. She is programme leader for the Level 8 Cert Mgt Occupationl Stress and Well Being. Prior to joining WIT, since 2014, she actively taught HSE based mental health nurses, NCHDs (Non Consultant Hospital Doctors) and Psychiatrists in the area of CBT and best practice in disorder specific models, as part of her clinical nurse specialist role. Marie also used her teaching skills and CBT specialist training to educate and support GP's in her service area.

Prior to Marie's mental health education and experience, she completed a BSc in Business Studies.
