Biography

Martin Hayes is currently a lecturer in Electronic Engineering in the department of Engineering Technology (School of Engineering) and has been lecturing at WIT/SETU since 1996.

He graduated with a Ph.D from University of Limerick in 1996. He had previously graduated from UL with a M Eng (by research) in 1992 and with a 1st Class Honours in electronics in 1990.

He is currently the Programme Leader for the Higher Certificate in Electronic Engineering and is also the Programme Leader for the Certificate in Automation

His current lecturing topics are Analog Electronics, Semiconductor Fundamentals, Test and Fault Techniques and Applied Electronic Projects.

His research interests include Telecommunications and IOT. 

He co-led  the development of a new Level 8 Common Entry Engineering course option in Automation that will help serve regional industry graduate and upskilling needs. This was developed after consultation with regional companies including Bausch & Lomb, Sanofi, Integer and TQS. 

He is widely involved in the SETU community through various activities including student engagement, recruitment and retention work. He was previously a member of WIT's Academic Council. 

He has consistently strove to improve the academic experience of students and to help ensure that the course remains relevant to industry needs. Integrated project work has been become a major part of HC Electronics.

HC Electronics now has significant project work in specialist modules in 1st and 2nd year that encompasses material taught in several parallel modules. Students also experience mini-projects in these parallel modules that connect into the main project, be it a software or hardware connection.

This approach to project work draws consistent positive comments from external examiners and other stakeholders
