Biography
Dr. Mary-Kate Burke is the Veterinary Medicine Programme Development Lead working within the Faculty of Science and Computing. Having completed a MVB in Veterinary Medicine from UCD, Mary-Kate worked in equine and mixed clinical practice in Australia and the UK. During her time in the UK, Mary-Kate worked as a Clinical Instruction Mentor within a partner practice of the University of Surrey. While there, she completed the RCVS Certificate in Advanced Veterinary Practice (CertAVP) focussed on Equine Stud Medicine, as well as a Post Graduate Certificate in Veterinary Professional Studies (PgCertVPS) with the University of Liverpool. Mary-Kate then pursued a clinical and teaching role at Cambridge Equine Hospital and Department of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Cambridge. Her role as Deputy Equine Rotation Lead focussed on clinical work-based teaching and assessment as well as lecturing and clinical work. As Academic Lead for Directly Observed Procedural Skills (clinical assessment), Mary-Kate was also responsible for the review, revision and implementation of changes to the system for clinical assessment of final year veterinary medicine students. During her time at the University of Cambridge, Mary-Kate completed a Masters in Medical Education (MMedEd). She was awarded Fellowship of Advanced HE (FHEA) in recognition of her commitment to professionalism in higher education teaching and learning. Mary-Kate's Masters' research focussed on factors affecting the career choices of veterinary students with disabilities, neurodiversity and chronic conditions. Her research interests also include equine reproduction, veterinary curriculum development and modern teaching techniques.
