Biography
Professor Michael Harrison has worked at WIT / SETU since 1999. He is Head of the Department of Sport and Exercise Science and a former Dean of the School of Science and Computing. His research, undertaken in conjunction with University Hospital Waterford and UPMC Whitfield, considers the impact of exercise for clinical populations, including age-related frailty and prostate cancer. He has a specific interest in immune cell ageing and possible effects of these cells on vascular disease. He is also engaged in the evaluation of physical activity interventions that use "pick-up football" to target men, interventions that have a specific focus on cardiovascular disease risk.
Professor Harrison has been part of different national working groups and local initiatives to establish community-based exercise services for individuals with chronic health conditions. He was the Principal Investigator on a recently completed project to establish a national framework and qualification specification for exercise professionals who work with people with long term conditions. He is currently the Chair of the group developing the extension of the national physical activity guidelines for chronic conditions, pregnancy and postpartum. He is a former Chair of the Register of Exercise Professionals in Ireland and has sat on the Professional Standards Committee of the European Register of Exercise Professionals. Professor Harrison holds a Fellowship from the American College of Sports Medicine.
I have delivered modules on the Health and Exercise Science programme relevant to Exercise is Medicine including Clinical Exercise Physiology and Physical Activity Epidemiology
Professor Harrison is a member of the Biomedical Research Group, part of the Pharmaceutical Molecular and Biotechnology Research Centre at WIT. He is also a member of the Centre for Health Behaviour Research. Much of his research is undertaken in conjunction with both local hospitals, University Hospital Waterford and UPMC, Whitfield Waterford. His PhD students work out of the PMBRC Biomedical Laboratory and Exercise Physiology laboratories.
