Biography

SarahJane is a Lecturer in Sport & Exercise Science and course leader for the BSc in Sport & Exercise Science in the Department of Sport & Exercise Science in SETU Waterford. She coordinates the jockey research programme in conjunction with The Irish Horseracing Regulatory Board and is a Sport Physiology Senior Consultant with Sport Ireland Institute. She is also an ISAK-accredited anthropometric instructor (Level 3) delivering standardised internationally accredited courses nationally.

SarahJane graduated from Sport Science & Health in DCU. She spent time as an undergraduate and postgraduate research assistant in the Centre of Sports Medicine & Human Performance at Brunel University in London and the School of Exercise Science at the Australian Catholic University in Sydney, respectively. SarahJane received a scholarship funded by The Irish Horseracing Regulatory Board to complete her PhD and Postdoctoral Research role in DCU focusing on the health and performance characteristics of jockeys. She has also completed a MSc in Applied Sports Nutrition in St Mary's Twickenham with a dissertation focusing on body composition in elite male athletes.

SarahJane is involved in research relating to jockey's health and performance which directly informs practices and strategies implemented into the racing industry in Ireland. She has successfully supervised three funded PhD students to completion and is currently supervisor on 3 other funded PhD projects and 1 Postdoctoral researcher - all related to some aspect of jockey health and performance. Her research interests also include musculoskeletal health and body composition of elite athletes and she co-supervises 2 PhD students in SETU Carlow investigating body composition and performance in elite female athletes. She is part of the Women in Sport Oversight Group representing the Performance thematic area. SarahJane is currently external examiner on various undergraduate degree courses in Ireland and has acted as both external and internal examiner for PhD Viva Voce as well as a reviewer for Sports Science and Sports Nutrition related journals.

SarahJane was Tournament Nutritionist for the Women's Rugby World Cup held in Ireland in 2017. She was also part of Team Ireland's sport science and medical team at the holding camp for Team Ireland at the Olympic Games in Rio 2016 and London 2012.

Horse Racing

SarahJane collaborates with key stakeholders in the horse racing industry:

The Irish Horseracing Regulatory Board (IHRB) formerly The Turf Club: SarahJane is part of IHRB's Research Group helping to coordinate the research programme relating to the health & performance of jockeys.

Horse Racing Ireland: SarahJane was instrumental in the development of the Long-Term Athlete Development Pathway for jockeys and is part of the steering group assisting in the implementation of sport specific education and support strategies.

Racing Academy & Centre of Education (RACE): From 2011-2020, SarahJane acted as the Health Related Fitness Coordinator for young jockeys in Ireland, providing recommendations and guidelines on the health related fitness module delivered to trainee jockeys.

Represented the research group on the Working Group for Jockey Weights, 2021/2022

Collaborates closely with other horse racing nations primarily Australia, HongKong, UK and USA.
