The Literacy Development Centre is a National Centre, based in SETU – Waterford Campus, which offers a suite of third level professional development programmes individuals either currently working in, or interested in working in, the Adult Literacy, Adult Education, Community Education and the wider Further Education and Training (FET) Sectors.
The Literacy Development Centre is a member of the Project Advisory Group (PAG) with AONTAS, ETBI and representatives of Community Education regarding the New European Agenda for Adult Learning (NEAAL).
Student centred flexible programmes in Adult Literacy and Adult and Further Education from NFQ Level 6 to Level 9 within the Literacy Development Centre, which is also engaged in the following activities:
- Research in the field of Adult Literacy and Adult Education;
- Policy support with regional and national stakeholders and advocacy for the adult education practitioner and the adult learner;
- Advocacy for the adult education practitioner and the adult learner as well as the promotion of literacy as a whole.
The Literacy Development Centre is a leading provider in its field, supporting adult education for over 30 years and houses the SETU/NALA Adult Literacy Accreditation Project, funded by SOLAS. The Literacy Development Centre offers programmes that supports the education requirements of the FET Professional Learning and Development Statement of Strategy 2020-2024 and the Adult Literacy for Life Strategy 2021-2031.
These student centred flexible undergraduate programmes are designed for those either working in, or wishing to upskill to work in, the adult education and the wider FET sector. These programmes connect teaching with practice, where our BA(Hons) in Teaching in Adult and Further Education, is accredited by the Teaching Council of Ireland https://www.teachingcouncil.ie
