The N-TUTORR programme is designed to transform learning, teaching and assessment by focusing on transforming the student experience and developing the capabilities of all staff (PMSS, Academic & Research) in the seven partner institutions, as all staff have a role in this transformation. Supporting staff to engage in meaningful continuing professional development (CPD) activities is key critical in transforming the HE experience for all students.

There are several high-level deliverables in each of Stream 2’s work packages (2.1, 2.2, 2.3). These include:

  • Establishing a sectoral Sustainable Higher Education Framework Steering Group/Community of Practice (CoP).
  • Determining baseline activity learning and development activity across the sector in terms of staff capability through a Training Needs Analysis within the context of supporting the transformation of learning, teaching & assessment against a sustainable education framework (including digital transformation, resilience, EDI and Sustainable Development Goals and to scope out and advise on a toolkit to support staff transformation.
  • Scoping of a staff development portal and learning and development plans.
  • Identifying Staff Champions across the sector to work both at institutional and national level and to act as ambassadors for sustainable higher education.
  • Scoping accredited learning provision for staff through a digital badging system.

Designing and implementing a Curriculum Framework for Sustainable Higher Education Future & Resilience and during the lifetime of the project to begin to implement this, along with the integration of UDL principles, into curriculum at programmatic reviews.

As part of Stream 2 activities a national Community of Practice (CoP) has been established. Members include all those involved in staff development across the sector. The aim of the CoP is to showcase and share existing initiatives and best practices, in addition to exploring areas for potential development within staff CPD. Meetings take place on the first Wednesday of every month with a rotating host scheduled for each session.

If you are a staff member in one of the partner institutions and are interested in joining, please contact one of the Stream 2 Leads, or Ken McCarthy.

N-TUTORR Week took place across all SETU campuses Monday 26 February - Friday 1 March 2024. The week saw over 40 events taking place, all of which align to one or more of the six key project themes, including Education for Sustainable Development (ESD), Equality Diversity & Inclusion (EDI), digital transformation and student employability.

The week was a national event which took place across all seven partners and both staff and students organized events online and in person.

Events ranged from Sustainability in Action: Co-creation of a Native Irish Tree Hedgerow at the SETU West Campus in Carriganore to EDI at the Heart of Humanities a day long showcase event on the Kilkenny Road Campus in Carlow. Other events included a Lunchtime Concert titled The Sound of Inclusivity in the College Street Campus Chapel and a Swap and Repair Workshop in the Summerhill Campus in Wexford.  The Asian Lantern Festival-Bridging Cultures and Advancing Equality in HE took place on the Cork Road Campus in Waterford and were an exciting highlight of the week.

The week concluded with the N-TUTORR on Track event which finished on the Cork Road campus. The event saw Dr Tom Farrelly from MTU and N-TUTORR Student Champions from Technical University of the Shannon (TUS) using sustainable transport to visit all five universities during the five days of N-TUTORR Week.

The week was the first of its kind in the technological higher education sector and didn’t disappoint.

The programme of work in this area builds on significant enhancements in learning, teaching and assessment capabilities which have been achieved within, and across, participating institutions over the past decade, in particular. The work aims to modernise the Curriculum Development Framework to embed the six N-TUTORR themes. The aim is to produce a framework for building new programmes, and programmes facing programmatic review, that enables teaching staff to embed the six themes into teaching, learning, assessment and curriculum development. The core body of work includes:

  • Developing guidance around embedding the themes into the curriculum – this will include guidance notes, training and toolkits.
  • Creating evaluations both at curriculum and individual level in relation to the themes.
  • Creating perspective videos involving those who teach in Higher Education, where they share views on the themes and their place in the curriculum.

The Curriculum Framework is a practical resource, designed by partners across the TU sector in collaboration with subject experts to support all staff to engage with the N-TUTORR themes of Sustainability, Academic Integrity, EDI, UDL, Employability and Digital Transformation.
